- Clearance certificate from the federal divorce registry
- Extensive revisions, negotiation, additional parties or court proceedings
Fees are in Canadian dollars and are subject to HST and applicable disbursements. “From” prices apply to standard matters. Complex matters, extensive revisions, negotiations, additional parties or court proceedings may require an additional fee. Final scope and fees are confirmed in the written retainer agreement, which you read and sign before any work begins.
Questions about cost
How payment works
Is HST included in the prices shown?
No. Every figure on this page is before tax. HST is charged at 13% in Ontario, so a $1,800 fee comes to $2,034 once tax is added. The tax-inclusive figure is shown beside each price so there is no arithmetic to do.
What is a disbursement?
Money we pay out to somebody else on your behalf — most commonly the court's filing fee, the federal clearance certificate, courier charges or the cost of commissioning a document. We pass these on at cost, without a mark-up. Court fees are set by the government and change from time to time, so we confirm the current amount before you commit.
Why do some services say “from”?
Because the work genuinely varies. A separation agreement between two people with a rented flat and no children is not the same job as one involving a house, a pension and a parenting schedule. The “from” price is what a standard matter costs. If yours is not standard we tell you the actual figure before you commit, not afterwards.
When do I pay?
After you have read and signed the retainer agreement, and before the work begins. You will receive an invoice through your client portal setting out the fee, the HST and any disbursements separately.
What if my matter turns out to be more complicated?
We tell you, in writing, before doing the extra work — never in an invoice after the fact. You then decide whether to proceed. If the matter is beyond what an online practice should handle, we say so and point you to someone better suited rather than take your money.
Do I have to pay for the first conversation?
No. Telling us what is going on and getting our view on which service applies is free. The $250 Initial Legal Consultation is a different thing: a scheduled hour with a lawyer giving you advice on your own circumstances.
